And then, a cough. Alan clicked back, upped the decibels again, played at half speed.

CHARLES: Tell me someone is here.

This time, the cough had shape to it.

A hundred decibels, quarter speed, Charles’s voice low, drugged.

CHARLES: Tell me someone is here.

?: Here.

It sounded like a word. Not in the generous pauses Charles left after his questions, but the breath of space between his first statement and his second. A voice, likely male, definitely not with him in the basement when the recording was made. Alan backed up half a second, hit play again.
